Election 2024: Allen hopes to win sixth consecutive term

(The Center Square) – Republican incumbent Rick Allen is hoping to win Georgia’s 12th Congressional District for the sixth time.

Since Allen first won in the 2014 midterms, the district has ranked one of the most Republican in the state. Most recently, Allen won by almost a 20% margin in 2022.

Democrat Liz Johnson is running to try to unseat the incumbent, but faces an uphill battle, especially with fundraising.

Up through June 30, Allen raised $960,000, despite having no challengers in the Republican primary. His opponent brought in only $11,000.

Allen still ended the period with over $1 million in the bank, Johnson about $8,000. This is according to documents from the Federal Election Commission.

In his time in office, Allen has pushed the economy as the “only way to create jobs.”

“I’m a conservative small businessman, I’ll bring my experience in job creation and principled leadership to Congress to combat the growing reach of the federal government into the lives of every American,” Allen says on his campaign website. “We need to build on the foundation of our nation’s economy by loosening Washington’s grip and letting the free market do its job.”

Johnson is committed to “freedom,” “security,” and “opportunities.”

This includes the right to vote, women’s rights, civil rights, and accessibility.

“It’s about the freedom of choice, the right to privacy, protection and equal pay,” Johnson says on her campaign website. “Thus, I pledge to support and help protect: women’s health, reproductive rights, economic justice, ending domestic violence, ERA!”

Johnson calls for change in the district, which is located north of Atlanta and is largely rural. She has aligned herself with Vice President Kamala Harris.

“When presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks of signing a woman’s right to choose, into law, she knows that will require electing more Democrats like Elizabeth “LIZ” Johnson to the U.S. House of Representatives,” a post on her X says.

In the last few weeks in his work as a representative, Harris has voted in favor of a resolution calling for accountability for the Afghanistan withdrawal. He also voted for a bill ending “Chinese Dominance of Electric Vehicles in America.”
