Election 2024: Four candidates running to represent U.S. House 10

(The Center Square) – Four candidates are seeking to be the new representative in North Carolina’s heavily-Republican 10th Congressional District.

Republican Pat Harrigan won the spring primary with 41% of the vote, turning back four others. Next up are challenges from Democrat Ralph Scott Jr., Libertarian Steven Feldman, and Todd Helm of the Constitution Party.

While Scott promises “community-driven progress,” the Trump-endorsed Harrigan is prioritizing the economy, energy and national security.

Immigration is another key issue for Harrigan.

“Right now, under President Joe Biden, we don’t have a border,” Harrigan said on his campaign website. “And if we don’t have a border, we don’t have a country. It’s imperative that we secure our border – immediately – and enforce federal law.”

Scott has said that “God,” “family,” and “individual rights” are the “path to positive change.”

“Without respect for each other’s beliefs, our country will cease to exist,” Scott said on his campaign website.

He proposes raising the tax deduction for children to be equal to adults and allowing the American people to regularly vote on “rights, such as abortion, gun control, and gerrymandering.”

Even after redistricting since the last election changed the boundaries of the district, Harrigan is still favored to win.

In 2022, the longtime incumbent Rep. Patrick McHenry won with 73% of the vote – largest since his first win in 2004. He decided not to seek reelection and is not bidding for another office this year.

Located between Asheville and Charlotte, District 10 was hard hit by the devastation from Hurricane Helene. Yet, voting will continue throughout the region.

“We must rally together and give our fellow North Carolinians the help they need during this critical time,” Harrigan said on social media. “Let’s show the strength and compassion of our great state by offering everything we’ve got to support their recovery.”
