FEMA Launches Rumor Control Page Amid Threats and Misinformation

Threats against Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) workers responding to Hurricane Helene have temporarily halted aid in parts of North Carolina. A man found with a handgun and rifle was apprehended after threatening FEMA staff. He was arrested near a storm relief site and released on a $10,000 bond.

These threats have caused disruptions to relief efforts. FEMA said they are adjusting operations to keep safe while continuing to assist disaster survivors. Currently, over 1,200 FEMA personnel are working in North Carolina, having helped rescue or assist more than 3,200 people.

Last week, FEMA had to launch a rumor control page to counter misinformation. The page aims to clarify rumors, prevent confusion, and keep survivors informed with accurate disaster recovery information.

Some residents report not even applying for assistance because of rumors. FEMA has urged the public to verify information through trusted sources and avoid spreading unverified reports that could hurt or hinder recovery efforts.
