Finding New Sounds: What I’ve Been Spinning This Month

On my flight to Charlotte last week, I had hours to kill — and nothing but music to fill the time. Gaming might be my usual beat, but this trip reminded me that music is where my heart really is. Music has always been my way of zoning out and reflecting, and this past trip gave me the perfect excuse to catch up on some projects I’d been meaning to hear. So here’s my top five listens of the month — albums and artists that have been on repeat for me lately.

Big Drops

First off, three big drops caught my attention: “UY Scuti” by Young Thug, “Already Legend” by YFN Lucci, and “For Her 2” by Hunxho. Surprisingly, I haven’t given Thug’s album the full listen it deserves, which is crazy since I’m a huge fan and curious how he approached music after his legal restrictions. Lucci’s project sounded solid from the two tracks I heard, but it’s another one I need to circle back to. Hunxho, on the other hand, had me locked in — I played “For Her 2” from start to finish at least six times on the flight.

I already recognized a few tracks from snippets Hunxho had posted on Instagram, but hearing the full songs made me appreciate them even more. His mix of smooth melodies and raw storytelling gives the album a balance — music that feels aimed at women but still hits hard for men, especially if you’ve been through heartbreak, messy relationships, or the ups and downs of looking for love. So far, my top three songs (in no particular order) are “#1 Girl,” “What I Need,” and “If Only” featuring 21 Savage.

Underground Florida Heat

After running through those big releases, I wanted something different — and the underground scene, especially out of Florida, delivered. Hurricane Wisdom has been in heavy rotation for me lately, his sound is fresh and unique, different from what you typically hear in the mainstream. Alongside him, FCG Heem has been catching my ear too. Both of them tap into that melodic wave Florida artists are leaning into right now — and as a melody lover, that sound is right in my lane.

Singles on Repeat

As far as singles, I’ve been bouncing between genres depending on my mood. Apple Music is my go-to for big releases, but when I’m digging for gems, SoundCloud is home base. Honestly, I find myself preferring the underground these days — the lyrics are sharper, the flows hungrier, and the creativity stronger than what’s on the charts.

Closing Thoughts

At the end of the day, this month’s listening session reminded me why music is my biggest passion. Whether it’s a high-profile drop like Hunxho’s “For Her 2” or an underground artist pushing boundaries in Florida, music keeps evolving — and I love keeping up with that evolution. I may cover gaming most of the time, but when it comes to music, that’s where my heart beats the loudest.
