Former NFL Player Barry Wilburn Dies in Memphis House Fire

(AURN News) — According to television station WMC in Memphis, family and friends are mourning the loss of former NFL player and Super Bowl champion Barry Wilburn, who died in a house fire in Orange Mound early Friday morning. His family confirmed he was the victim of the fire.

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on Douglass Avenue around 2 a.m. Friday. Firefighters found an unresponsive man in the rear hallway, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilburn, a Melrose High School graduate, went on to play for the Ole Miss Rebels before being drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1985.

The defensive back played five seasons and led the league in interceptions in 1987, the year Washington won Super Bowl XXII over the Denver Broncos.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
