Four new candidates declare in Colorado

Ballotpedia tracked four new state-level candidates in Colorado between Aug. 14 and Aug. 20. This was two more candidates than the prior week.

The four candidates are Democrats and all four are running for state legislative offices in 2024.

Details on these candidates are below:

Victor Bencomo (D) is running for Colorado House of Representatives District 8. Bencomo said, “[I am] not a career politician. [I am] a father, husband, veteran, and gun safety activist who is ready to serve our community in the State House by fighting for quality education, mental health resources, common-sense gun laws, public safety and justice, and affordable housing and small business support.”Lindsey Daugherty (D), currently the incumbent representing District 24 in the Colorado House, is running for Colorado State Senate District 19. Daugherty said, “Affordable health care. Competitive schools. Clean air. Good paying jobs. All Coloradans deserve these, but for many, it is not a reality. [I want] to change that by creating an economy and community that works for everyone. That’s what [I’ve] worked for in the Colorado State House, and that’s why [I am] now running to represent Colorado Senate District 19!”Lindsay Gilchrist (D) is running for Colorado House of Representatives District 8. Gilchrist said, “[I have]always deeply believed in public service and that government should be a place where we come together to solve real problems. That is why [I am] running, and [I am] looking forward to earning your support.”Sharron Pettiford (D) is running for Colorado House of Representatives District 8. Pettiford said, “The legislature is not new to me, neither is the work I have done for working families for over two decades now!”

Since the beginning of the year, Ballotpedia has identified 15 candidates for state-level offices in Colorado. Three hundred and twenty-two candidates ran for state-level office in Colorado in 2022, while 287 ran in 2020. In 2022, 112 were Democratic, while 134 were Republican. In 2020, 125 were Democratic and 107 were Republican. Nationally, Ballotpedia has tracked 659 Democrats and 818 Republicans running for state-level office in 2023, and 121 Democrats and 166 Republicans running in 2024.
