Georgia gas prices decline after steep increases

(The Center Square) – Motorists who purchase fuel in Georgia are seeing slightly lower prices, according to AAA.

The cost of a regular unleaded gallon of fuel is $3.87, down a nickel from last week due to lower oil prices, the organization said.

The prices are still 30 cents higher than last month and 96 cents higher than last year.

“While drivers are beginning to see lower prices at the pump, it’s still a good time to look for ways to save on fuel,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Global events can quickly impact oil and gas prices, and uncertainty surrounding the Middle East remains a factor to watch.”

Georgia has the highest gas prices among its neighboring states but was among the lowest earlier this year. Gov. Brian Kemp extended a month-long gas tax suspension for two weeks in May for the Memorial Day holiday but the tax break is no longer in effect.

Georgia’s fuel tax adds about 33 cents to gasoline and 37 cents to diesel fuel, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue. The money funds statewide transportation projects.

Among the surrounding states, Florida has the highest gas prices, at $3.83 per gallon on Monday, followed by North Carolina at $3.79 per gallon.

The Peach State’s eastern neighbor, South Carolina, has the lowest average fuel cost at $3.66 a gallon, with Tennessee close at $3.67. Alabama’s fuel cost is $3.74 a gallon.

The national average is $4.09, down 2 cents from a week ago. Texas and Indiana are tied for the lowest gas price in the country at $3.60 per gallon, according to AAA.

Three states have gas prices over $5 per gallon. California continues to lead the states at $5.66 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $5.46 and Washington at $5.13.
