(The Center Square) – The average price for a gallon of gas jumped 23 cents for Georgia residents as the gas tax moratorium ended.

Georgians are paying $2.93 for a regular unleaded gallon, up $2.70 from last week, according to AAA. Gas was $2.95 a year ago. The highest gas price ever in the Peach State was $4.49 on June 15, 2022.

“Due to the negative impacts of Hurricane Helene, Governor Kemp signed an Executive Order suspending the collection of motor fuel tax until October 16th. With the expiration of this gas tax reprieve, Georgians are now confronted with a renewed strain each time they refuel,” said Montrae Waiters, AAA spokeswoman. “Fortunately, amid these challenges, there lies a glimmer of hope as Georgia’s state average for gas prices remains a comforting 24 cents below the national average.”

The national average price for regular unleaded gallon of gas is $3.17. Hurricanes Milton and Helene did not have a significant impact on gas prices.

The least expensive gas is in the Augusta-Aiken, S.C. area, at $2.88 a gallon. The Savannah area has the highest price at $3.05, according to AAA.

Georgia’s gas prices are now the highest of any surrounding states. Florida has the highest price at $3.09 a gallon, and Tennessee has the lowest at $2.80 among Georgia’s neighbors, according to AAA.
