Glass security film planned for Pittsburgh’s Carrick High School

(The Center Square)- Pittsburgh Public Schools approved a contract with Window Tint Inc. to install glazing film on the windows of a high school.

During the Sept. 20 school board meeting, members approved the $22,574 agreement to install a security glazing film on the windows and doors in each entryway, main offices, cafeteria, and the security office at Pittsburgh Carrick High School.

According to the vendor’s website, 3M Safety & Security window film can help fortify glass and offer additional time to react in life-threatening situations like a terrorist attack, active shooters, bomb blasts, or natural disaster situations.

Many schools across the country have installed security film, among other safety features, to prevent attacks on students and faculty.

In 2012, Adam Lanza shot through a plate-glass window next to the locked front-entrance of Sandy Hook Elementary School before killing 20 students and six adults inside, according to media reports.

In the state of Michigan, school districts were given millions of dollars to boost school security; how they did it was left up to the district. At Adrian Public Schools, it spent $62,000 to secure all windows in district buildings.

Henderson County Schools in Kentucky also added the 3M safety and Security film to windows and glass this year, costing the district $250,000.

Pittsburgh Public Schools didn’t respond to an email seeking comment.
