Google Calendar Still Missing Black History Month

(AURN News) — The 100th year of Black History Month continues to highlight the challenges facing the Black community in the Trump 2.0 era.

From the removal of Black history exhibits and information at the federal level to the dismantling of diversity, equity and inclusion programs — and pressure from President Donald Trump on corporations that attempt to expand opportunities for Black Americans — the broader landscape continues to shift.

Google quietly removed Black History Month from its default calendar listings in 2025. The Verge first reported that the company not only eliminated Black History Month from its default listings but also removed Indigenous Peoples Month and Women’s History Month. Google said the changes began in mid-2024.

“For over a decade we’ve worked with timeanddate.com to show public holidays and national observances in Google Calendar. Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world,” Google told The Verge.

“We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing — and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable,” Google said.

But as CNBC later reported, Google also ended its diversity hiring goals in 2025 and made additional policy changes as the corporate climate shifted under the Trump administration.

In a statement to Axios during Black History Month last year, Google said, “Google continues to actively celebrate and promote cultural moments as a company in our products.”

Yet as Black History Month unfolds in 2026, the observance remains absent from Google’s default calendar listings.
