Government Shutdown Hits 28 Days Amid Senate Stalemate

(AURN News) — I’m Ebony McMorris. The government shutdown continues after 28 days, and tonight it’s at a standstill.
For the 13th time, the Senate has failed to move forward on a Republican-backed plan to reopen the government. The vote was 54-45, with no one breaking ranks.
Vice President JD Van told reporters after a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans that troops will still be paid Friday.
Earlier this month, the administration used leftover research funds as a temporary patch. Twenty-five states and the District of Columbia have sued the administration, saying it’s illegal to withhold food aid under the SNAP program. While tens of millions of Americans could lose benefits as early as Saturday, a federal judge in California has stepped in, blocking the administration from laying off thousands of federal workers.
While a union lawsuit moves forward, the stalemate continues. Even some Republicans, like Senate Minority Leader John Thune, say piecemeal fixes aren’t the way to govern.
