Harris says she’s in the presidential race

Vice President Kamala Harris said Sunday that she will seek the Democratic presidential nomination.

President Joe Biden is not seeking another term and said he will focus on serving out the remainder of his time in office. The president endorsed Harris as the nominee.

“I am honored to have the president’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said on her social media page. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025.”

Harris sought the 2020 presidential nomination. She dropped out of the race in December 2019. In August 2020, Biden named Harris his vice presidential running mate.

She praised Biden on social media.

“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country,” Harris said.

The Democratic National Convention begins on Aug. 19. DNC Chair Jaime Harrison did not mention Harris in a statement released on Sunday.

“This process will be governed by established rules and procedures of the Party,” Harrison said. “Our delegates are prepared to take seriously their responsibility in swiftly delivering a candidate to the American people. In short order, the American people will hear from the Democratic Party on next steps and the path forward for the nomination process.”
