Higgins trounces crowded field in Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District

(The Center Square) — In Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District, incumbent U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., has emerged victorious, winning against an underfunded field of challengers, a trend shared by five of six congressional races.

Higgins secured over 70% of the share, for a total of 226,264 votes. No other candidate secured more than 20%.

Higgins, widely recognized as a staunch conservative and a key member of the House Freedom Caucus, claimed the seat amidst a familiar and competitive field; every primary since his first election in 2016 has drawn at least four contenders, though none managed to unseat him.

Higgins’ record of promoting smaller government, lower taxes, and secure borders, as well as his work on the House Homeland Security Committee as Chairman of the Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, resonated with voters across the district.

His significant campaign funds – exceeding $950,000 as of mid-October – and recognition were pivotal in bolstering his presence, as his competitors reported no campaign contributions.

His committee assignments include the House Homeland Security Committee, where he chairs the Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee.

Higgins, a former law enforcement officer, previously replaced Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, and has won each election since, securing 64% of the vote in 2022, indicating significant gains this time around.

He supported measures to limit government spending, terminate COVID-19 vaccine requirements for foreign travelers, denounce socialism, and lower energy costs by promoting domestic production.

These votes align with his commitment to fiscal conservatism, individual freedoms, and energy independence, consistent with his role as a prominent House Freedom Caucus member.

Higgins’ opposition to the National Defense Authorization Act further underscores his selective approach to government spending and policy priorities.
