The Supreme Court has handed President Donald Trump yet another win — this time allowing his administration to move forward with laying off nearly 1,400 Education Department employees.
The 6-3 decision came through the court’s shadow docket, with no written explanation from the majority.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, writing in dissent, accused the court of enabling “lawlessness.” She pointed out that the administration had openly “announced its intent to break the law”
The layoffs were originally blocked by a federal judge in Boston who warned they could cripple the department’s ability to fulfill its legal obligations, such as distributing financial aid, supporting students with disabilities and enforcing civil rights in schools. That injunction is now on hold.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump celebrated the ruling, calling it a “Major Victory to Parents and Students across the Country,” and said it allows him to return key responsibilities to the states.
