(The Center Square) – Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs will not be issuing an executive order allowing bars to serve an additional hour during the remaining World Series games.
Capitol Media Services reported that the governor’s office would not take the suggestion from state Rep. Matt Gress, R-Phoenix, who cited a state law that would have allowed bars to serve alcohol till 3 a.m. instead of 2 a.m. in the event of a major professional sporting event.
“The governor, in consultation with the governor’s office of highway safety and the public safety community in this state, may issue an executive order that extends the closing time until 3:00 a.m. for spirituous liquor sales in connection with a professional or collegiate national sporting championship event held in this state,” Arizona statute states.
On Friday, The Center Square asked Phoenix Police Department Public Information Sergeant Rob Scherer at a media availability if they were preparing for the possibility of an executive order temporarily changing liquor sale laws.
“I don’t know if it necessarily changes, it may extend us an hour. You know what I mean. That’s what it might do. Obviously, we don’t necessarily comment on any kind of political things. We address the rules and laws as they are,” Scherer said.
“If that’s something that changes, obviously it will kinda extend what we may do an hour earlier as far as getting people out. It’ll extend that egress in getting people out from the downtown world an hour later,” he added.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be back at Chase Field on Monday night as they play in their first World Series since 2001. The series is currently tied 1-1 against the Texas Rangers, and the next three games will be played in downtown Phoenix. If games six and seven are needed, they will be played in Arlington, Texas.
