Holiday traffic could eclipse records

(The Center Square) – AAA is predicting 108,677 more travelers than last year, breaking a record.

Most of the 3.7 million Georgians who are expected to travel more than 50 miles from home will take their cars, especially those with young children, according to the American Automobile Association’s Montrae Waiters.

“Gas demand in December goes down as the weather gets colder, more people work remotely, and holiday shoppers purchase their gifts online rather than in person,” Waiters said.

Georgia gas prices remained stable on Friday at $2.92 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, just slightly above last week’s cost. A year ago, Georgians were paying $3 a gallon.

Travelers headed to nearby states will find gas less expensive, with the exception of Florida ($3.05). The least expensive gas is in Georgia’s northern neighbor. Tennessee gas prices are hovering at around $2.72 a gallon.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport officials said about 3.7 million travelers will make a stop there between today and Sunday, Jan. 5. Christmas Day is expected to be the busiest day, with 327,724 passengers expected.
