Howard University Requires Athletes to Stand for National Anthem or Stay in Locker Room

(AURN News) — According to The Hilltop, Howard University’s student newspaper, the athletics department has introduced a new policy requiring athletes to either stand during the national anthem or remain in the locker room.

The change followed a Dec. 29 women’s basketball game against the U.S. Military Academy in which Howard players knelt during the anthem.

The team has been kneeling since 2020 to protest racial injustice and police brutality.

Athletics officials said the decision came after internal discussions with coaches and athletes about pregame conduct.

To avoid further controversy, the women’s basketball team has chosen to stay in the locker room during the anthem for the rest of the season.

Some athletes expressed disappointment at losing the option to protest publicly, while others said individual actions could bring consequences for the entire athletics department.
