Truck looted after accident in Chicago

A UPS tractor trailer was looted after being involved in an accident in Chicago Thursday. The truck was traveling in the city’s Little Village neighborhood when the trailer’s roof was torn off while attempting to go under a viaduct. Police said a group of about a dozen people took the opportunity to remove packages from the damaged vehicle. It is unclear how many packages were stolen.

Paws Chicago takes in animals as Humane Society of Southern Illinois closes

After the Humane Society of Southern Illinois announced it was closing after nearly 70 years of service, Paws Chicago has stepped in and is taking in animals. Several dogs and 16 cats traveled more than 300 miles to Chicago from Murphysboro. The Humane Society of Southern Illinois stopped taking animals in August. Officials said the decision to close the shelter resulted from operational challenges, including increasing costs and staffing needs.

Superdawg statues come down for cleaning

The legendary mascots at the popular Superdawg eatery in Chicago are nowhere in sight. The owners removed the 12-foot-tall hot dog couple this week so they could be cleaned up and repaired. Maurie and Flaurie are the hot dog figures that have greeted Superdawg customers since 1948. The last time the statues came down from the restaurant’s top was 25 years ago. The owners expect the mascots to return in about a month.
