Accused Highland Park shooter seeks barring confession tape

The attorneys for the man accused of killing seven people at a Highland Park Independence Day parade in 2022 say their client was denied his constitutional right to legal representation while being interrogated by police.

His lawyers made the accusation during a hearing Thursday. Authorities have said Robert Crimo III confessed to the shooting, but his attorneys are seeking to have videotaped statements he made to police barred from his trial, which is expected to begin in February.

Spending on banners questioned

Village of Dolton trustees say they never approved nearly $20,000 worth of banners that Mayor Tiffany Henyard had installed this summer. The banners featured a picture of Henyard and used the title “Super Mayor.”

Police body cam footage shows Henyard asking who ordered the banners to be removed, then saying she planned to press charges.

Calls to close ‘robocall’ loophole

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is joining a coalition of 46 attorneys general calling on the Federal Communications Commission to close what they say is an unmonitored loophole to access the U.S. telephone network.

The group is calling on the FCC to strengthen the Robocall Mitigation Database to penalize providers for false or inadequate information. Raoul says if the procedures are adopted, it would stop more illegal robocalls.
