Illinois quick hits: Alderwoman escorted from migrant tent protest; unemployment increases

Alderwoman escorted from migrant tent protest

A Chicago alderwoman was accosted and had to be escorted from the scene of a protest against a proposed migrant housing facility Thursday.

According to police, Julia Ramirez and an aide arrived at the protest, but were quickly surrounded by protestors demonstrating against a tent-based structure to house migrants in her district. Officers shielded Ramirez from the protestors and brought her and her aide to a nearby squad car.

Since Aug. 22, a total of 428 buses have come to Chicago, with more than 18,000 migrants transported to the city.

Record Lottery income

The Illinois Lottery has announced the highest income generated in its history.

Fueled by massive jackpots in the Powerball and Mega Millions games, the Lottery announced a record net income of $882 million for fiscal year 2023 ending in June. That is a 5.7% increase over last year.

The Illinois Lottery was founded in 1974 and officials said it has contributed over $24 billion to the state’s Common School Fund in support of K-12 public education since 1985.
