‘Bring Chicago Home’ ruling appealed
The city of Chicago has filed a motion to stay a Cook County judge’s order that deemed the “Bring Chicago Home” referendum illegal.
The referendum is asking voters to approve a higher real estate transfer tax on home sales over $1 million. That money would be used to assist the homeless in Chicago.
The judge ruled that the measure was vague and unconstitutional.
Fatal police involved shooting
The McLean County coroner has identified the person who died in Saturday’s officer-involved shooting on Interstate 55.
Trayvon Little, 37, of Springfield died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds. Illinois state troopers responded to a call of shots fired on the interstate near Lexington. When they arrived, they said two vehicles were on the side of the highway and one person was shooting at the other vehicle.
Little then allegedly pointed his gun at officers, who exchanged fire. Interstate 55 was shut down in both directions for several hours.
New cultural district
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Monday joined the Puerto Rican Cultural Center to celebrate “Puerto Rico Town” as an official State-Designated Cultural District.
Through the State-Designated Cultural Districts Program, 10 recipients were designated for 2023 and 2024. Launched last year, the program aims to uplift the unique contributions of historic cultural districts with the overarching goal of increasing economic development opportunities.
