Illinois quick hits: Bus company sues Chicago; melting river ice

Bus company sues Chicago

A Texas bus company that has been transporting migrants to Illinois is now suing the city of Chicago over its ordinance that regulates where and when buses can drop off passengers.

Any bus that violates rules the city has in place faces a fine or could have the bus impounded. Wynne Transportation claims the rule interferes with interstate commerce and carries out “intentional discrimination: against the bus passengers.”

Melting river ice

Officials are using a unique method to try to alleviate ice jams on the Kankakee River. Residents in Wilmington who live near the river are under a flash flood warning because of the ice jams.

Will County’s Emergency Management Agency is using water from a cooling lake at the Dresden Generating Station to help melt the ice on the river. Water used to cool down the nuclear power plant is warm enough to help cut through the ice jams, but officials said it may take awhile to get things flowing again.

Memorial Stadium renovations approved

The University of Illinois Board of Trustees have approved renovations to Memorial Stadium.

Officials said the joints on the east stands are failing, and new joints would prevent water from seeping through and causing more rust on the structural steel. Renovations are budgeted to cost $3.7 million.

Memorial Stadium will be celebrating its 100th anniversary later this year.
