Illinois quick hits: Campus protesters arraigned; contractor sues tollway

Campus protesters arraigned

Seven demonstrators protesting the war in Gaza on the campus of Illinois State University made court appearances. All seven pleaded not guilty to a count of criminal trespass to state land and a school building. The protestors had met with the ISU president at his office. They allegedly remained in the office until the building closed and were removed by campus police.

Contractor sues tollway

A construction company claims the Illinois Tollway fired them from a project last week without explanation, so now they have filed a lawsuit. WBBM reports the tollway hired Judlau Contracting last year for $323 million to reconstruct an interchange on I-294. The company said it hired workers and moved equipment and was about six weeks into construction when they claimed they were fired in a letter last week. After repeated efforts to speak with officials at the tollway failed, they filed suit.

Bass fisher accused of cheating in tournament

An Indiana man is facing charges for allegedly cheating in an Illinois bass fishing tournament earlier this month by bringing fish across state lines and trying to pass them off as tournament catches. Illinois Conservation Police received a tip that 49-year-old David Moore was hiding fish on a stringer on the Calumet River. The following morning, conservation police staked out the location and said they observed Moore retrieve four smallmouth bass from the stringer and place them in the live well of his boat. He then entered the fish at the weigh-in.
