Illinois quick hits: Company settles with state; nightclub closed

Company settles with state

A fundraising software company has agreed to pay nearly $50 million to settle claims brought by the Illinois Attorney General and the attorneys general of 48 other states because of a data breach.

Blackbaud has agreed to the settlement following a 2020 data breach that exposed sensitive information from 13,000 nonprofits. According to the lawsuit, Social Security numbers, and health and financial information of donors and clients of the nonprofits, universities and hospitals that the company serves were exposed. Illinois will receive $2.2 million from the settlement.

Police urge overdose reporting

The Bloomington area is seeing a spike in overdoses as the fentanyl crisis continues to affect Illinois communities large and small.

A Facebook post by the Bloomington Police Department states that there have been nine reported overdoses and three deaths in the past two weeks alone. Police advise anyone who witnesses an overdose to call 911 immediately.

Illinois has a drug overdose immunity law, which provides immunity from arrest and prosecution for many drug possession crimes if a person calls 911 to assist an overdose victim.

Nightclub closed

Chicago police have issued a closure order for a nightclub and restaurant after eight people were shot and wounded following an altercation near the club Sunday.

According to police, a summary closure for Blum located in the River North downtown area, was issued Monday. An alderman for the district sent a letter to constituents calling for the closure of the club, describing it as a “bad establishment.”
