Court denies request for appeal of ammo tax challenge

The Illinois Supreme Court has denied Cook County’s request to appeal a case challenging taxes on guns and ammunition.

The case Vandermyde v. Cook County began in 2012 after the county approved a $25 per gun and 1 to 5 cent tax per cartridge of ammunition. Initial challenges went to the Illinois Supreme Court, which in 2021 ruled against the county. The county then modified the ordinance.

Gun rights advocate Todd Vandermyde sued again. After a district court dismissed the case, earlier this year an appeals court reinstated the challenge.
