Illinois quick hits: Dolton mayor speaks out; police bust up train heist; Snake Road to close for snakes

Dolton mayor speaks out at meeting

A special meeting of the Thornton Township trustees Wednesday was called off, but that didn’t stop supervisor and Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard from having her say. Henyard slammed recent actions by trustees to limit her spending and enact a new credit card policy. Earlier this month, former Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot revealed the Village of Dolton racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit card purchases, including $43,000 spent on Amazon in one day last year.

Police bust men amid train heist

Four men were arrested after trying to steal nearly 40 flat-screen televisions from a train in Chicago. After a report of a burglary in progress, police officers saw four men unloading TVs from a train onto the bed of a truck in Englewood. The men tried to run away but all four were arrested after a short chase. All the TVs were recovered.

Snake Road to close for snakes

It is that time of year again when a road near LaRue Swamp in Union County will be shut down for a snake migration. The Shawnee National Forest Service announced it will be closing Forest Service Road 345, also known as Snake Road, to help ensure the safe crossing for several species of snakes and amphibians for migration. The 2.5 mile road will be closed from September 1 through October 30. It allows for the creatures to migrate from their summer habitat in LaRue Swamp to their winter habitat in the limestone bluffs.
