Illinois quick hits: Durbin reacts to Trump conviction; interest earned on state funds

Durbin reacts to Trump conviction

Illinois U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says former President Donald Trump was convicted by a jury of his peers in New York. Trump, who was convicted of 34 felony counts Thursday, said the trial was a scam. Durbin said it’s now up to the American people to decide if Trump is worthy of being elected president. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who will be in Peoria speaking to Republicans this Saturday, called the verdict a weaponization of the justice system.

Chicago violence

Separate shootings in Chicago overnight left a 14-year-old boy in critical condition and a 28-year-old man dead. The Chicago Tribune reports a gunman went to the man’s residence on East 69th Place and knocked on the door before shooting multiple times and fleeing the scene. Separately in North Lawndale, a boy was on a sidewalk when someone in a vehicle opened fire, striking the boy in the stomach. No one is in custody for either crime.

Interest earned on state funds

Illinois taxpayers earned more than $126.4 million in investment earnings from the state’s investment portfolio for the month of April. Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced the gains, saying they can be used to fix roads, repair bridges, purchase school supplies, and invest in local communities.
