Illinois quick hits: Government worker pay increases; Extreme Heat Warning

Government worker pay increases

Illinois state workers are getting raises faster and making 9.5% more in salary than private sector workers.

According to the Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois public sector pay has grown 57% faster than private sector pay between 2021 and 2024.

State government employees now make an average salary of $85,689.

An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky and southeast Missouri until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says heat index values could reach 110 degrees.

Heat advisories are in place for parts of central Illinois.

Fans mourn Sandberg death

Baseball fans are mourning the death of longtime Chicago Cubs star Ryne Sandberg.

The Baseball Hall-of-Famer spent most of his 16 major league seasons with the Cubs and later managed the Philadelphia Phillies.

Sandberg died of cancer Monday at the age of 65.
