Illinois quick hits: ICC rejects utilities’ grid plan

ICC rejects utilities’ grid plan

The Illinois Commerce Commission has rejected Ameren Illinois and ComEd’s integrated grid plans by a 4-1 vote, finding that both companies failed to comply with several components of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. Specifically, the Commission’s decisions found that both utilities failed to sufficiently incorporate customer affordability into their proposals, and their grid plans did not outline how 40% of plan benefits would be directed to low-income and environmental justice communities. The decision requires that both utilities file an updated grid plan within three months of the final order.

Illinois’ NAACP head under fire for migrant comments

The head of the Illinois NAACP is embroiled in a controversy after comments she made about incoming migrants. In a recent Zoom meeting with NAACP leaders around the state, Teresa Haley said immigrants have been raping people and breaking into homes and said they were similar to savages. Gov. J.B. Pritzker has denounced the comments. When reached for comment from ABC7 in Chicago, Haley suggested the video was fake and said “with AI, anything is possible.”

Collecting tornado wind data

Students at the University of Illinois are researching the recent tornado outbreak in Tennessee. So far, they have collected data on wind speeds and looping features from the leftover debris from the storms. Wind speeds are then estimated based on those loops from photos. Once they have collected their data, the findings will be published in an academic journal.
