Indiana makes bid for Bears
An Indiana lawmaker is making an attempt to lure the Chicago Bears over the border. Indiana state Rep. Earl Harris, Jr.’s legislation proposes forming a sports development commission with a goal of enticing a professional sports franchise to set up shop in the region.
The Bears purchased the former Arlington National Racecourse property in suburban Chicago as a possible new location for a stadium complex. The team currently has a lease with Soldier Field until 2033 but can break the lease as soon as 2026 if they pay a fee.
Raoul urges Biden to ban menthols
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has joined 21 other attorneys general in submitting a letter to the Biden administration asking for swift implementation of proposed regulations prohibiting the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.
The coalition is urging the administration to finalize its reviews of the FDA’s proposed rules without delay.
Official accused of skimming
A former employee of the Chicago City Clerk’s Office is accused of skimming at least $100,000 from vehicle sticker sales.
An Inspector General’s report found that a former payment service representative stole cash from sticker sales between 2014 and 2021. The employee has since resigned and is now facing criminal charges.
The IG’s office said it is actively investigating 214 cases of misconduct.
