K-9, suspect killed in shootout in Alton

One suspect and a K-9 police dog were killed following an apparent shootout Thursday in Alton.

Illinois State Police reports officers from the Alton Police Department engaged in gunfire with a suspect. The suspect was shot and taken to a hospital with injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say one officer and one K-9, both from the Alton Police Department, were shot amid gunfire. The officer is being treated for undisclosed injuries at a nearby hospital. The K-9 was rushed to a local veterinary hospital, but later died from its injuries.

Texas delegate robbed in Chicago

A Texas delegate in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention was robbed at gunpoint this week. The robbery took place at 2 a.m. Wednesday outside the Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel.

Police said someone got out of a black SUV and robbed a man at gunpoint, then ran across the street and robbed the delegate. No one was hurt and no arrests were made.

Health info available at Du Quoin fair

The Illinois Department of Public Health will provide a variety of public health information and services at the Du Quoin State Fair, beginning Friday, Aug. 23 and running through Monday, Sept, 2.

IDPH staffers will be on hand each day of the fair at the IDPH tent on Grandstand Avenue. Among the services and information available included in partnership with the Egyptian Health Department, IDPH will offer free naloxone, which can be used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

Staffers from both agencies will also have information on how to spot the signs of an overdose.
