Illinois quick hits: Lawsuit filed over migrant issue; cybersecurity awareness

Lawsuit filed over migrant issue

Two members of a Chicago community have filed a lawsuit against the city in connection with the migrant crisis. The lawsuit alleges inhumane conditions for the housing of migrants in shelters and police stations.

Twenty-two more buses filled with migrants arrived this week in Chicago from the southern border. Mayor Brandon Johnson said he plans to travel to the southern border as part of a Chicago delegation, though offered no details on when such a trip would take place.

Groups concerned with bird deaths

A large number of migrating birds died this week after flying into the windows of McCormick Place in Chicago.

According to the group Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, nearly 1,000 birds collided with the building near the lake. The report said the event appears to be a combination of high intensity migration, adverse weather conditions and lights illuminating large glass.

The group advises businesses to turn off non-essential lights during the migration season, which includes October.

Cybersecurity awareness

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and the FBI in Springfield is marking the occasion to alert the public about cybercrimes and attacks. The FBI continues to be the lead federal agency responsible for investigating cyberattacks.

A 2022 report from the Internet Crime Complaint Center found that Illinois ranks fifth in the U.S. for the most internet crime victims. The cost of this crime to victims is almost $267 million, seventh highest in the nation.
