Illinois quick hits: Man charged for killing Chicago cop; Navy Pier investigation continues

Man charged for killing Chicago cop

The Chicago Police Department has announced charges against a 23-year-old man in the fatal shooting of a police officer. The announcement comes just days after Officer Enrique Martinez was shot and killed during a traffic stop.

Someone inside the vehicle started shooting as police approached, striking one officer and another occupant of the vehicle. Darion McMillan faces multiple charges, including one count of first-degree murder of a police officer.

Navy Pier investigation continues

Police are still searching for a man who was recently fired from his job at Navy Pier and returned to the Chicago tourist attraction and killed two workers.

The attack happened Tuesday afternoon after the fired worker gained access to an office near a loading dock. Police said they have a person of interest but declined to name the alleged attacker, citing a department policy of not naming people until they are charged with a crime.

Rain busts drought

Illinois received beneficial rainfall over the past few days with some spots seeing several inches. The rain alleviated drought conditions that have been building since July.

Central Illinois and to the south saw the most rainfall, with Springfield and Taylorville receiving over 5 inches. Champaign and Decatur received over 4 inches of rain.

More rain is expected in Illinois this weekend.
