Illinois quick hits: Man released after fatal crash; Dolton hires Lightfoot

Man released after fatal crash

As a result of the Pretrial Fairness Act, a man facing charges in a crash that killed a DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy last month has been released from custody.

Nathan Sweeney of DeKalb is charged with reckless homicide and DUI causing death. Illinois State Police said Sweeney was under the influence of drugs when his truck ran off the road and slammed into Deputy Christina Musil’s squad car.

On Monday, a judge ordered his release from custody under conditions of the Pretrial Fairness Act. Musil, who was an officer for five years and also served in the National Guard, leaves behind three young children.

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has been hired by the Dolton Village Board to investigate alleged wrongdoing by Mayor Tiffany Henyard.

Henyard, who was not present at the meeting, is accused by village board members of misusing village funds. Lightfoot, who is getting paid $400 an hour, urged the mayor and her staff to cooperate with the investigation.

Soybean dryer fire

A massive fire broke out at a soybean dryer in Gibson City Monday. Fire and heavy smoke was reported at International Flavors and Fragrances where proteins and oils are manufactured.

To battle the flames, firefighters pulled water from a nearby pond because the city water is limited. It is not known when the plant will be able to reopen.
