Illinois quick hits: Meat recall; state police investigate shooting

Meat recall

A nationwide ready-to-eat meat and poultry listeria recall impacting grocery stores has now expanded to include food served in schools, including some in Illinois. The items range from deli sandwiches from Trader Joe’s to deli salads from Walmart, Aldi and more. The Food Safety and Inspection Service reported the food was shipped to more than 100 schools across 17 states. Two schools were listed in Illinois, including Fox Valley Family YMCA in Plano and Kiddie Scholars in Matteson.

State police investigate shooting

The Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Mt. Carmel. On Oct. 10, officers with the Mt. Carmel Police Department responded to a domestic dispute call. During the response, investigators said officers encountered a juvenile suspect armed with a knife. The officer fired his weapon, striking the teen and another juvenile. Uriah Howder died at the hospital at the age of 16. The officer has been placed on administrative leave.

Highway to reopen

A major highway in Putnam is expected to reopen this week after being shut down due to a silo collapse. According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, crews have been working for days to take down the silo that failed on Tuesday. Illinois Route 29 has been closed to all commercial traffic.
