Migrant buses impounded
Illinois communities are taking action against bus companies from Texas that drop off migrants in the state. Rosemont trustees this week approved an ordinance that would fine bus companies $750 per vehicle and impound buses when they drop off migrants without following rules about when and where that can happen. The Chicago Sun-Times reports the ordinance comes after about half a dozen buses started bringing asylum-seekers to Rosemont on Dec. 6. The city of Chicago impounded a migrant bus for the first time Wednesday night after they passed a similar ordinance.
Paid time off delays
The Chicago City Council has voted to delay the implementation of a new law that will ensure most Chicago workers get at least 10 days of paid time off every year. The delay means that Illinois workers outside the city will have more flexibility to take time off than those residing in Chicago. Beginning Jan. 1, a measure signed by the governor will require employers statewide to give their workers at least one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked. The city council voted to delay the implementation until July 1.
ComEd Four seek delay in sentencing
Four former executives and lobbyists at the state’s largest utility company convicted of conspiring to bribe former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan have asked a judge to pause their case before sentencing in January. According to the motion filed Thursday morning, the defendants said that because the U.S. Supreme Court has taken up a case that could affect the outcome, the judge “should stay all proceedings in this matter, including any decision on the pending post-trial motions and any sentencing proceedings.”
