Illinois quick hits: Niemerg succeeds in write-in race; judge tells Blagojevich ‘please go now’

Spring snow in Northern Illinois

Northern Illinois is getting a dose of winter Friday. A winter weather advisory was issued for several northern Illinois counties, including Winnebago and Boone counties.

A winter storm warning was issued for McHenry County. Rockford is expected to get up to 5 inches of snow. The National Weather Service recommends drivers be cautious as several bands of snow were expected to develop north of I-88.

Niemerg succeeds in write-in race

An incumbent state representative has declared victory in an unusual primary election race.

Rep. Adam Niemerg and his challenger, Jim Acklin, both ran as write-in candidates because Niemerg was kicked off the ballot for failing to notarize his candidate paperwork.

No Democratic candidate ran in the primary election.

Judge tells Blagojevich ‘please go now’

Rod Blagojevich’s attempt to open the way to hold public office has been denied.

More than a decade after he was convicted on federal corruption-related charges, and after spending eight years in prison, Blagojevich went back to the courthouse to claim the Illinois legislature was wrong to ban him from running for office.

In a scathing decision, a federal judge said the judiciary has no power to “unimpeach, unconvict and unremove” a public official. The judge’s opinion even worked in a Dr. Seuss reference, saying “Go. I don’t care how. You can go by foot, You can go by cow, will you please go now.”
