Illinois quick hits: Opioid antagonists in schools; students rally to remove police from schools

Opioid antagonists in schools

The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued an updated standing order allowing schools to keep a supply of medications like opioid antagonists on hand, and also permitting school nurses or other trained personnel to administer them to students in the event of an opioid overdose.

The updated order builds upon authority established in 2015 to expand access to the medications, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The new order makes clear that schools can obtain a supply of such medications without a prescription.

Students rally to remove police from schools

Dozens of Chicago Public School students and supporters rallied outside the Chicago Board of Education headquarters Thursday in support of a resolution calling for an end to School Resource Officers.

Some students said they don’t feel safe around police officers. Just 39 schools currently have SROs.

Senior citizens real estate tax deferral

The Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding senior citizens about the availability of the Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program.

The program, which works like a loan, allows qualified seniors to defer all or part of their property taxes and special assessment payments on their principal residences.

Taxpayers who apply and qualify are allowed to defer a maximum of $7,500 per tax year, including both first and second installment payments. The deadline to apply for the program is March 1.
