Raoul pushes for retail theft law

The Illinois Attorney General is urging action from Congress to combat organized retail crime.

Kwame Raoul is co-leading a bipartisan coalition of 38 attorneys general of U.S. states who sent a letter to Congress asking that they pass legislation to help the states fight back.

In the letter, Raoul and the coalition said that organized retail crime has contributed to financial losses of over $121 billion in the U.S.

Illinois lawmakers have issued a joint letter to the White House Office of Management and Budget demanding action on the approximately $1.8 billion in funding that they said is being withheld.

They contend that many agencies and organizations in Illinois have reported an inability to access funds, with some in danger of needing to pause operations, cancel projects, or lay off staff. They said 14 state agencies, boards, and commissions are being impacted, including the Illinois Department of Agriculture, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Henyard loses election

Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard used the word “landslide” live on social media Tuesday in her bid for re-election. It turned out to be true, but not the results she had been hoping for.

Trustee Jason House soundly defeated Henyard, who has been under investigation by the FBI for questionable use of public funds. Unofficial Cook County results revealed Henyard had only 12% of the vote, while House had 88%.
