Pritzker issues disaster proclamation after storms
Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a Disaster Proclamation after the severe weather and flooding that affected several northern Illinois counties in July. This proclamation comes after the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security concluded extensive fieldwork to assess the damage and destruction caused by the storms in communities across Illinois. On July 13 through July 16, severe storms passed throughout the state, producing heavy rainfall, high winds, flash flooding, tornadoes, and 6.5 inches of precipitation.
Judge holds repeat shoplifters in jail ahead of trial
Two Chicago women awaiting trial for shoplifting are accused of committing the act again in Oak Brook, allegedly making off with over $1,000 worth of merchandise. Reneashia McDowell and Shania Jacobs face felony charges of burglary and retail theft after leaving an Ulta Beauty store without paying for items. This time, a judge denied a pre-trial release for both women.
State health officials urge safe food preparation
The Illinois Department of Public Health reminds Illinoisans to pay attention to safe handling and food preparation. September is National Food Safety Education Month, or sometimes also referred to as Food Safety Awareness Month. It’s also a time for numerous gatherings like football tailgate parties, events that could be ruined by unsanitary practices. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that annually, 48 million people in the U.S. contract some form of foodborne illness, resulting in symptoms that can include nausea, vomiting, cramping and chills.
