Illinois quick hits: Quinn seeks stadium subsidies referendum; schools to close during eclipse

Quinn seeks stadium subsidies referendum

Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn wants voters to decide whether the state’s taxpayers should help fund new stadiums.

Quinn has filed paperwork asking the Chicago City Council to call for an advisory referendum on the November ballot that would allow voters to decide if public money should be used to fund new stadiums.

Quinn previously tried to get a referendum on the Bears’ renovation project for Soldier Field but wasn’t successful and he says taxpayers are still paying the price.

Although they didn’t win the jackpot in the Mega Millions drawing Tuesday night, 40 coworkers joined together to buy tickets and win the second top prize after matching all five numbers.

The $1 million winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased at a gas station in Bartlett. In addition, two players matched four numbers and the Mega Ball, plus they added the game’s ‘Megaplier’ feature to win $20,000 each, and five players matched four numbers and the Mega Ball to win $10,000 each.

Schools to close during eclipse

Schools in Illinois that are in or close to the path of totality for the April solar eclipse plan to close to give students a chance to witness the event.

Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has canceled classes for the day. Schools in Carbondale and Waterloo will be closed, and the Alton School District will have an early dismissal.
