Illinois quick hits: Robbery spree investigated; CA livestock rule to impact IL farmers

Robbery spree investigated

Police are investigating a string of robberies in which more than a dozen people were held at gunpoint during a three-hour time frame Sunday in Chicago.

A total of 14 robberies were reported beginning at 5 a.m. across the city. Police said in each robbery, the assailants exited a black Audi, pointed guns at the victim’s heads, and demanded personal property. A victim was shot in one of the incidents.

CA livestock rule to impact IL farmers

Illinois farmers are preparing for the Jan. 1 implementation of a California welfare law mandating larger space requirements for pigs, cows and chickens.

The Farm Animal Confinement Initiative requires sows to have at least 24 square feet of space. According to the Illinois Pork Producers Association, the state’s pork industry contributes nearly $14 billion to the Illinois economy and is the fourth largest in the country.

Charitable giving tips

The Illinois attorney general is issuing an advisory to Illinoisans ahead of Giving Tuesday. The Tuesday after Thanksgiving is typically a day when people are encouraged to make donations to charities and causes that are important to them.

Attorney General Kwame Raoul is cautioning potential donors to make wise decisions when choosing where to donate. Raoul said pay close attention to the name of the charity and ask questions. Also, never pay in cash for security and tax record purposes.
