Schools to close after scholarship program ends
Not even a month after the Invest in Kids school choice scholarship program ended in Illinois, two suburban Catholic schools are announcing they are closing.
St. Frances of Rome in Cicero along with St. Odilo in Berwyn announced they will close in June after the program ended. A school granting organization says more schools will close if legislators don’t renew the Invest in Kids program this spring.
U of I freezes tuition
University of Illinois students won’t be seeing a bigger tuition bill next school year. The U of I board of trustees has approved a tuition freeze.
It is the seventh time in 10 years the university hasn’t increased tuition for the Champaign-Urbana, Chicago and Springfield campuses. The board also approved a freeze on school fees for the first time in 25 years.
Radon awareness urged
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to take time in January to test their home for radon as part of Radon Action Month. It’s estimated more than 1,100 people in Illinois develop radon-related lung cancer each year.
Radon tests can be purchased at most hardware and department stores. It is recommended to conduct one short-term test and one long-term test to ensure consistent readings.
