States Attorneys call for U.S. surgeon general warning for social media

States attorneys from Illinois and 40 other states are prodding Congress to require a U.S. surgeon general warning for young people on social media platforms. The group is urging action amid heightened concern about how algorithms on social media can affect mental health, including depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. According to the Pew Research Center, 95% of youth ages 13 to 17 reported using social media.

Sheriff’s officer won’t survive injuries after chase

A Northwest Indiana sheriff’s officer shot in the line of duty in Illinois earlier this month will not survive his injuries. The sheriff’s office said on Tuesday that Corporal Brandon Schreiber, shot on Sept. 1 while pursuing a suspect across the Illinois border in Sheldon, will not survive. According to Illinois State Police, preliminary reports showed that officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office were engaged in a pursuit of an armed suspect with a hostage. After the Newton County Sheriff’s Office joined in, the chase came back to Illinois and led to a shootout. The suspect was killed.
