Illinois quick hits: State files in gun ban case; disaster tax relief available

State files in gun ban case

The state of Illinois has filed its final briefs in the challenge against the state’s gun and magazine ban. Among the state’s closing arguments are that restricted items “were designed for military combat,” “far exceeds what is commonly used for self-defense” and the law “responds to unprecedented societal concerns.”

The state says if an injunction is granted blocking enforcement of the law, it should be stayed pending appeal. Plaintiffs argue the law violates the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Judge Stephen McGlynn is expected to issue a ruling in the case soon.

Individuals and businesses impacted by severe storms in July will have some disaster tax relief.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that those affected by tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that started July 13 will be able to delay filing their individual and business tax returns and tax payments until Feb. 3, 2025.

Be alert for deer when driving

Illinois motorists are being reminded to be alert for deer.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said deer are entering their peak mating season and are especially active at dawn and dusk now through December.

In 2023, IDOT said there were 14,862 crashes involving deer in Illinois. Of those, most resulted in damage to property or vehicles. Seven of the crashes resulted in fatalities.
