U.S. Steel announces shutdown

U.S. Steel has announced it will shut down the Granite City Works plant indefinitely. As part of the decision, the company issued about 1,000 employees notices that they could be laid off and said it anticipated about 60% of those workers would likely lose their jobs.

The move comes two months after U.S. Steel temporarily idled a furnace in a move it called “risk mitigation” in response to the now-resolved United Auto Workers strike, and called it a temporary move.

I-57 improvements complete

The Illinois Department of Transportation marked the completion of a series of multiyear improvements worth $82 million along Interstate 57.

Nearly 20 miles of I-57 were patched and resurfaced, while two bridges were repaired along a commercial and residential corridor connecting multiple communities from Chicago’s South Side through the south suburbs. At approximately 359 miles, I-57 is the state’s longest interstate.

Deer harvest totals

Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 53,348 deer during the first weekend of the Illinois firearm deer season between Nov. 17-19. That is about 100 more deer than last year’s first firearm weekend.

The top three counties for deer harvest were Adams, Jackson and Fulton. Illinois’ seven-day firearm deer season will conclude Nov. 30-Dec. 3.
