UAW strike will hit Illinois pocketbook
Near-term impacts to the credit of various U.S. states including Illinois aren’t expected by the United Auto Workers’ strike, but Fitch Ratings says a protracted work stoppage could erode consumer activity and state and local revenues. A report released Thursday says the limited number of striking workers will limit the short-term economic and fiscal effects in Missouri, Ohio and Michigan, but Illinois facilities could be impacted if the strike is expanded and extended.
Race riot of 1908 could get national monument status
The U.S. Senate could soon take up a measure to approve the Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument Act. U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth announced the measure passed committee. The violence more than a century ago stemming from a mob of white Springfield residents led to the murder of at least six Black Americans and scores of homes and businesses burned. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed in the aftermath.
Illinois Arts Council seeks grant applications
Applications are now being accepted by the Illinois Arts Council for this fiscal year’s Master/Apprentice Program. The program offers a $3,000 grant supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. The deadline to apply is Dec. 1.
