Illinois quick hits: Venezuelan held for sexual assault allegations; Cook County continues count; expect eclipse traffic

Venezuelan held for sexual assault allegations

A Venezuelan migrant was denied pre-trial release after following a woman from a train station and sexually assaulting her on the University of Illinois-Chicago campus.

According to court documents, the 27-year-old man stole the woman’s belongings and sexually assaulted her before running away. He was later arrested. The same man was arrested for tealing from a retail store earlier this month.

Cook County continues count

There is still no clear winner in the Democratic Primary for Cook County State’s Attorney. The race between Eileen O’Neill-Burke and Clayton Harris III remains tight.

After the Chicago Board of Elections and Cook County election officials counted mail-in ballots Wednesday, results show O’Neill-Burke with a lead of 1,637 votes. According to Illinois state law, election officials have until April 2 to finish counting mail-in ballots that are arriving after election day.

Expect eclipse traffic

The Illinois Department of Transportation is warning of heavy traffic across the state, especially in southern Illinois, when a total solar eclipse takes place April 8.

While many will be able to see a partial version of the eclipse in the northern part of the state, thousands are expected to travel downstate and chase the eclipse path.

The agency said crowds of up to 200,000 are expected to travel to the prime viewing areas in southern Illinois.
