Indiana ranks high in nation in sports betting handle

(The Center Square) – Hoosiers bet more than $427 per person through July, one of the highest amounts in the country, according to a new report.

NoDepositRewards analyzed statewide reported figures through July and used them to calculate how much had been wagered per capita for the states’ population of those 18 years old and older.

For Indiana, that meant a betting handle of $427.34 per person this year, the ninth-highest total in the nation.

“Sports betting has been growing exponentially in America since its legalization in many states,” NoDepositRewards Mason Jones said. “In just two years, wagers have gone from $21 billion in 2020 to $85 billion in 2022. So far in 2023, there has been a total of $59 billion; this is a 176% increase on 2020 figures and a 3% increase on the whole of 2021, and it’s only halfway through the year. Sports betting seems to only be growing in popularity and trends suggest it will only continue to grow, especially as more states legalize it.”

More than $2.2 billion in wagers have been placed in Indiana since July. The report said betting growth is not as high as in other states, but it does provide a baseline for potential future growth.

Since 2022, Hoosiers bet more than $4.4 billion.

New Jersey ranks first in betting with an average of $790.68 per person, followed by New York, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Kansas, Indiana and New Hampshire.

As previously reported by The Center Square, Hoosier state wagers rose nearly 70% in September over August to $404 million. Indiana’s September volume was 5.6% more than September 2022, despite neighboring Kentucky launching legal sports betting early in the month.

The state collected $4 million in sports betting tax revenue in September.
