Indiana sports gambling numbers rebound in September

(The Center Square) – The return of the NFL in September also meant the return of more gambling money in Indiana.

Hoosier state wagers rose nearly 70% in September over August to $404 million, and industry analysts expect it to grow as basketball season opens.

“Indiana sports betting surged as expected in September with the start of the NFL season as the month’s betting volume hit $404 million, a 69% increase over the previous month,” PlayIndiana Managing Editor Jason Jarrett said. “This bodes well for the state as the next three months will drive the year’s revenue with the NFL season in full swing.”

Indiana’s September volume was 5.6% more than September 2022, despite neighboring Kentucky launching legal sports betting early in the month.

The state collected $4 million in sports betting tax revenue in September, and Jarrett thinks all the numbers could rise when basketball returns.

The September numbers come after a weak summer that saw the state’s sportsbook’s wagers drop 10% in July from June and 1% from the previous year, according to PlayIndiana.
